Mother Teresa Facts by Savannah

Mother Teresa of Calcutta was born on 26th August 1910,

Mother Teresa’s birth name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu.

At the age of 18 she became a nun in Ireland and chose the name of sister Teresa, in memory of Saint Therese of Lisieux.

Mother Teresa is famous all over the world for her work with the poor in India.

She trained as a teacher and became principal of a high school in Calcutta in India.

Mother Teresa received a Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

1. Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born Aug. 26, 1910, in Macedonia to a financially comfortable Albanian family (they owned two houses, one of which they lived in). Her father died when she was 8, ending her family’s financial security.

2. Agnes was fascinated with missionaries from an early age, and by 12 she knew that she would commit herself to a religious vocation.

3. When she was 18, Agnes left home and joined the Sisters of Loreto in Rathfarnham, Ireland.

4. Although she lived to be 87, she never saw her mother or sister again after the day she left for Ireland.

5. After a year learning English in Ireland, Agnes transferred to the Sisters of Loreto convent in Darjeeling, India.

  • When Agnes was 12 she knew that she would commit herself to religious vocation
  • At 18 Agnes left home to Ireland
  • She took her vows as nun choosing the name Teresa to honour Saints Therese of Lisieux and Teresa of Avila
  • In 1946 Teresa  travelled to Darjeeling  on that journey she realised what her true calling was “I heard the call to give up all and follow Christ into the slums to serve him along the poorest of poor.”
  • It took two years of preparation before she was able to begin doing the work she  felt compelled
  • One of her first projects  was to teach children to read and write by writing in the dirt
  • In addition, she promoted literacy and taught the children basic hygiene
  • Her word, began to spread people started knowing her even people volunteering to help
  • She opened a hospice for the poor and home suffers of leprosy
  • Mother Teresa was honoured with many awards throughout her life
  • These awards were such as Indian Padma Shri ,Peace prize ,Albania’s golden honour of the nation and the Nobel peace prize
  • She refused the traditional Noble honour banquet ,instead requesting that the $192,000 budget be given to help the poor of India
  • Her work continued for the rest of her life

IMG_0630Mother Teresa was born on 27th August 1910.  She chose the day she was baptised as her birthday because this was more important to her. Her birth name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu and she was born in Macedonia. When she was 18 she went to Ireland and became a nun. Also in Ireland she chose the name Sister Teresa. Mother Teresa is famous for her work in India with the poor. For over 45 years she looked after the poor, sick, orphaned and dying. Sadly, Teresa died in September 1997.  She was made a saint in September 2016.
