Mother Teresa by Hannah

  • Her original name was Agnes Gonxha  Bojaxhiu
  • Agnes was born in August 26th  1910, Macedonia
  • Her father died when she was only 8 years old
  • When Agnes was 12 she knew that she would commit herself to religious vocation
  • At 18 Agnes left home to Ireland
  • She took her vows as nun choosing the name Teresa to honour Saints Therese of Lisieux and Teresa of Avila
  • In 1946 Teresa  travelled to Darjeeling  on that journey she realised what her true calling was “I heard the call to give up all and follow Christ into the slums to serve him along the poorest of poor.”
  • It took two years of preparation before she was able to begin doing the work she  felt compelled
  • One of her first projects  was to teach children to read and write by writing in the dirt
  • In addition, she promoted literacy and taught the children basic hygiene
  • Her word, began to spread people started knowing her even people volunteering to help
  • She opened a hospice for the poor and home suffers of leprosy
  • Mother Teresa was honoured with many awards throughout her life
  • These awards were such as Indian Padma Shri ,Peace prize ,Albania’s golden honour of the nation and the Nobel peace prize
  • She refused the traditional Noble honour banquet ,instead requesting that the $192,000 budget be given to help the poor of India
  • Her work continued for the rest of her life
